I found it very interesting to listen to the podcast “Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age: Universal Design for Leaning.” The work for this week in class truly embodies the ideas of UDL. After reading about UDL and the technology available for classroom use, we were then asked to listen to a lecture about those same topics. I think that not only did this help different types of learners, but it also provided me an opportunity to grapple with these concepts. Having them presented in different formats helped reinforce these ideas for me.
I work within a special education middle school. I don’t think technology is utilized as much as it could be within the classrooms. We have access to a smart board and it is almost never used. The reason for this is because the teachers are not trained in how to use it. I think this shows one of the complications with technology. Many teachers are not comfortable with new technology. Teachers can’t be expected to use technology without proper training. In promoting technology in the classroom, we must also think about how we will support teachers in using these advancements.
