Cell Phones in School?!- Elena McNish

I am currently in the childhood general/special education program here at Bank Street, and after listening to the podcast by Liz Kolb, for a brief moment I wished that I was working with middle school or high school students. I really appreciated the ideas that the two student teachers had for their students. The use of cell phones are forbidden within any classroom, but the truth is that most teenagers own one and regularly bring their phones to school.
I really liked the idea of giving students the option to call in their homework to the website droppio (I’m not sure if that’s the correct spelling?). I think that it was creative and it definitely fits in perfectly with UDL. The students were still meant to do the same assignment but they were given two different ways of completing it (written/oral). Cell phones are so taboo in school and I think that incorporating them (in appropriate ways) is an awesome idea. The student teacher was able to connect with her students and make their learning more meaningful.
As a teacher I think that it is important to recognize the influence technology has and will continue to have on our students as we move into a more technological future. I think that by making an effort to do so will greatly impact our teaching for the better and also allow us to meet our students needs in interests.
